Marmorino is the term for the product used by Venetian artisans to simulate the marble walls that were used throughout the rest of Italy during the Renaissance period. Architects and builders in Venice could not use marble, as it was too heavy to be used on the walls of a city built on water. After many years of experimentation, a product was created using slaked lime and finely ground marble, which was applied in layers. The resulting highly polished effect closely imitated marble.
